Abbot Hall Art Gallery is a thoughtfully considered selection of works displayed with care in this beautiful stately building, allowing visitors to freely absorb the art work in a leisurely, relaxed manor. The elegant Georgian rooms provide vibrant but manageable displays of a variety of genres.
The displays at Abbot Hall Art Gallery are as follows: 18th century paintings; 18th & 19th century furniture & objects d’art; 18th & 19th century watercolours; 20th century painting & sculpture; arts & crafts & 20th century studio pottery.
The Lakeland Arts Trust is the charitable trust that runs Abbot Hall. “Its aim is to give inspiration and enjoyment through direct contact with the work of artists and craftsmen. It also believes that understanding and knowledge of art and artists is likely to add to and enhance an audience's level of enjoyment. The Trust therefore has education at its core and this is seen as its primary function.”
Special events at the gallery include, for example, lectures and tours by some of the artists themselves. For example, in July of 2009, David Nash will be discussing his latest exhibition (Drawings & Sculpture), and allowing visitors some insight into his creative process. Other events include those that cater for children over the holidays, encouraging them to engage with contemporary and historical works.
Abbot Hall Art Gallery is family friendly, and there are many activities that keep all ages entertained, including special quizzes about Abbot Hall. Also, next to Abbot Hall is a park where visitors can enjoy a picnic safely, with a play area nearby.
Abbot Hall can be accessed by those with disabilities. The entire gallery is wheelchair accessible; an eight man lift allows access to each floor. The visually impaired are also welcome, and guide dogs are happily permitted. There is a disabled toilet.
There are many reasons to visit the nationally applauded Abbot Hall Art Gallery; guests will not be disappointed with the exhibitions nor the choice of things to do. (www.abbothall.org.uk)
