Looking for a Theatre in the Lake District? The Lake District is a budding place for theatre and the arts. Perhaps it is something to do with the Romance of the scenic lakes and surrounding hills that create a mystical setting for magical scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Or maybe it is simply to do with popular demand! Whatever the reason, the Lake District is not short of fantastic displays of artistry.
The Brewery Arts Centre, for example, is a hub of creativity in the small lakes town of Kendal. Nationally renowned for providing a host of original and exciting entertainment, the centre is well worth a visit. Categories that titillate the taste buds include literature, music, adult education, dance, cinema, family friendly activities, festival plus the 260 capacity theatre. The quality of entertainment is superb, and includes feasts from the likes of the ’Oddsocks’ theatre group, a stunning past performance by the legendary John Martyn, and a show by the BBC award nominated Etran Finatawa. The Old Laundry Theatre is a professional in-the-round theatre that offers a mix of theatre, music and comedy annually between the months of September to December, inclusive. It is situated in Bowness-on-Windermere, and opened in 1992 by Alan Ayckbourn, a trustee of the theatre. It is one of only 6 in-the-round theatres in the UK, providing excellent entertainment. The Theatre by the Lake is set in a stunning location, and lays just a few foot prints from the shores of Derwentwater, nestling on the edge of the little market town of Keswick. With a setting to rival that of the Minnack theatre in Cornwall, the Theatre by the Lake is well worth a visit just to see the dramatic surroundings. Though the performances themselves shouldn’t be missed! With an adaptation of Grimm’s fairytales by renowned poet Carol Ann Duffy to be shown towards the end of the year and into 2010, a spectacle should be anticipated - it is garnering fantastic reviews. ‘Summer Lightning’, a P.G. Wodehouse story adapted by Giles Havergal is sure to amuse and delight; and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ never fails to charm and impress. (www.theatrebythelake.co.uk)
