Water Sports

The Lake District is a great location for water sports. With beautiful scenery all around and lovely natural waters, where could be better to indulge in such exciting activities? From sailing and water skiing, to wakeboarding and canoeing, as well as a gentle leisure cruise on the larger lakes, the choices for things to do are wide.

With no tides or currents, but plenty of wind, the lakes are ideal to undertake some sailing. Tuition from RYA instructors on Ullswater or Windermere will equip you with all you need to know about handling two person dinghies, keelboats for families and single-hander boats.

Below the imposing, dramatic peaks lay the large mysterious pools that continue to pull the attention of divers. With the beautiful scenery surrounding the Ennerdale, and the possibility of seeing trout, perch, stickleback and minnow, this makes for a tranquil destination. The Windermere lake beckons those wishing to see eel, trout, perch, the rare Bulls Head and pike, the latter will only be seen at the dead of night though. Other lakes are open to divers, but some require special permission. Qualifications are needed; the most recognised is the PADI, which can be taken at different levels.

Eskimo or Inuit people of the extreme north were the ones who created the kayak to enable long sea journeys and to aid hunting. Now it is usually used for entertainment purposes! The boat fully encloses the driver to feel as if it is an extension of the body, and the double bladed paddle allows full control of the steering. You will soon be tackling rivers, rapids and mountain streams. Local activity providers will be able to supply you with all of the equipment that you need to prepare you for an exhilarating experience.

Wind-surfing with up-to-date equipment and materials can be enjoyed; canoeing – in an open boat for two – can also be indulged in. Canoe orienteering or touring can be undertaken, or even a five-day advanced open course.

If you’re looking for a unique sport to learn or to have an adventure with, you will not be stuck for things to do – the choice in the Lake District is fantastic!
